Discover more about the history of this remarkable city and follow Hoots Route’ in Chester Unlocked which is running throughout the summer. ‘Hoot’ is the owl that sits on the right shoulder of the Goddess Minerva statue in Edgars Field by the River Dee. The second century shrine is the only monument of its kind in Western Europe that remains in its original location. The original church on this site was founded in 689 by King Ethelred of Mercia, eventually becoming Chester cathedral in 1541. It is one of the very few abbeys to survive Henry VIII’s dissolution of the abbeys. The cathedral makes an exceptional venue for hosting special events.
